Royal Australian Air Force fast jet pilots and their Air Lift Group colleagues are undertaking advanced training at one of the world’s best tactical combat training facilities during Exercise Red Flag 07.
Exercise Red Flag 07 will be conducted at Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, from 5-16 February.
Australian forces are training with and against American and British aircraft types including the B-2, B-1, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-117 Nighthawk, AH-64 Apache and RAF GR-4 Tornadoes in mock combat missions over the western deserts of the United States.
Group Captain Mel Hupfeld is commanding the Australian contribution to the exercise, which includes more than 260 personnel, six F-111 strike aircraft and two C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.
The No 36 Squadron C-17 Globemaster is providing transport support.
Exercise Red Flag represents a significant training component for our aircrew. It provides realistic coalition operations training in an assessable high-threat environment providing complex air combat scenarios.
The exercise also gives maintenance and support personnel the opportunity to practice deploying to and operating from an overseas base.
