Location

Amberley is the largest operational base in the Air Force employing approximately three thousand five hundred Service and civilian personnel. RAAF Base Amberley is located 8 km from Ipswich and 50 km southwest of Brisbane.

Aircraft Operating on Base

Caribous

38 Squadron has operated the versatile Caribou tactical aircraft since its introduction into RAAF service in 1964. The aircraft is capable of very short take off and landings on unprepared runways and despite its age, is still recognised as one of the best short-haul transport aircraft in the world today. Its role is primarily light tactical transport capable of carrying various equipment and/or up to 32 troops/passengers.

F-111's

The F-111, otherwise affectionately referred to as the "pig", is a long range strike & reconnaissance aircraft. This aircraft is capable of flying at extremely high speeds at low altitudes in order to prevent radar detection.

Base Passes (including dependants)

Authority for issue of Access Control Cards to dependants is to be requested from SECPOL via e-mail by the responsible serving military member. Contractors are to approach their sponsors to have the appropriate application completed and then submit to SECPOL. New APS employees are to request authorisation in writing to SECPOL and include a letter from their sponsor verifying employment and full details including APS number.

Personnel who currently hold an ADF Identification Card do not require any additional authorisation, however they are to bring their old Identification Card and a Service Dress shirt to the appointment.

Personnel are reminded that all ADF members are required to carry an ADF Identity Card. Department of Defence Access Cards are issued to Defence civilians, contractors, dependants/family members and persons determined eligible for permanent, temporary or periodic access to a particular base/establishment by the Commanding Officer.

Identification Process - Base Access

Access Controllers employed at base entry points are required to ensure the validity of a person’s access pass before granting access to that person. Therefore scrutiny of some members may be more intense than others. All personnel are to present, and if requested, temporarily surrender their identity card/base pass to Access Controllers.

To establish positive identification, the removal of sunglasses may be requested and personnel riding motorcycles may be required to remove their helmets. To facilitate this process during morning peak entry periods, motorcyclists entering through the Main Gate are to use the left entry lane.
