Combat Support Group was formed from operational
Support Group, formerly consisting of Operational Support Wing
and the Airfield Defence Wing. More recently, the northern bases
and the base commanders have been added to the group. This change
met the need to have established organisations in peacetime able
to deploy rapidly to support air operations from bare bases or
forward operating bases, and to provide Air Force command of established
RAAF bases. The titles of the subordinate units (Expeditionary
Combat Support Wing and Squadrons, Combat Support Wing and Squadrons,
Combat Support Units) more accurately reflect the new role of
these units. Their training is now focussed on support during
combat, wherever that combat might occur, rather than support
at a peacetime location.
