1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU)

1RTU Badge

The function of 1RTU is to prepare newly-enlisted Airmen and Airwomen for service in the Air Force. Recruit training not only involves the imparting of basic military skills and knowledge, but also involves the transformation of civilians into Airmen and Airwomen who are proud to be part of a military service. Teamwork, self-discipline and 'esprit de corps' play a vital role in this training. Directly as a result of this, the Military Skills Instructors (MSIs) employed in the conduct of recruit training, as well as all other staff employed at the unit, must embody all the aspects of our mission and values.

The 1RTU philosophy of training is to take the qualities already possessed by trainees and build on them by direct teaching, by the example of staff, by 'learning by doing', and by coaching. Making an honest effort, making mistakes, learning from them, and doing better next time are essential features of this process, and should be treated as positive learning experiences. Each trainee has been assessed as capable of passing the course, and each starts wanting to succeed.

The challenge we face at 1RTU is to safely and effectively train recruits and Military Skills Instructors in the appropriate skills and attitudes, and to achieve high standards while maintaining and enhancing their motivation by employing a 'fair but firm' approach.
