These profiles and stories were donated to the RAAF Museum by the Gold Coast Branch of the Air Crew Association.

Service Profile: Sandy Edwards

Lionel O. (Sandy) Edwards DFC (ACA 17107) was in the Royal New Zealand Air Force from May 1941 until March 1946.

Sandy served in Bomber Command as a pilot with 149 Squadron based at Lakenheath and Methwold.

Flying Stirlings firstly, he completed 13 operations supplying the French maquis and mine-laying. Then on Lancasters 22, both night and day, operations over Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross while on squadron.

Later, he spent over 12 months as a flying instructor on Wellingtons at No. 26 Operational Training Unit (OTU), Little Horwood. Between the end of World War 2 and repatriation, he was instructing with Transport Command.
