Service Profile: Angus Meikle
Angus Meikle enlisted in the RAAF as aircrew whilst serving in the Citizen Military Forces. He was discharged from the Army on 4 December 1942 and became an aircrew trainee on posting to No. 3 Initial Training School (ITS) Kingaroy in Queensland on 7 December of that year.
Following categorisation as a pilot trainee, Angus was posted to No. 5 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) at Narromine in New South Wales, flying Tiger Moths.
His next posting was to No. 8 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) at Bundaberg, Queensland, for pilot training on Avro Ansons, gaining his Wings in September 1943. Following graduation and promotion to Sergeant Pilot, he was posted to No. 1 Air Observer School (AOS) Cootamundra, NSW, on 8 September 1943 as a Staff Pilot in the training of Navigators.
Further postings to No. 3 Embarkation Depot, Brisbane, and No. 2 Embarkation Depot, Bradfield Park, NSW, ensued and he departed Sydney on the Mariposa for San Francisco en route to UK for service in the European theatre of war. Arriving in UK on 10 December 1943 after travelling from New York on the Queen Mary, Angus spent some time at the RAAF's Reception Depot at Brighton before being posted to RAF No. 20 Advanced Flying School for refresher flying on Airspeed Oxfords.
He 'crewed up' at RAF No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Oxford, following which he and his crew trained on Wellingtons. Operational training was followed by a posting to a Heavy Conversion Unit for conversion to Lancasters prior to posting to RAF No. 15 Squadron based at Mildenhall, a permanent RAF Base which also housed RAF Headquarters No. 3 Group.
Angus served on operations until the end of the war in the European theatre. He was also involved in a food supply to Holland in a life-saving humanitarian operation, as well as the repatriation of Allied prisoners-of-war from Germany.
On return to Australia, Angus was discharged on 18 January 1946 with the rank of Flying Officer.
