Service Profile: Doug Newlyn
D.F. (Doug) Newlyn (ACA 18225) enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942 and trained as a pilot under the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) during World War 2.
After active service in the United Kingdom, he returned to Australia and continued his aircrew service as a member of the Permanent Air Force until 1954. During that period, he saw active service in Singapore during the Malayan Emergency.
In 1954, Doug transferred to the RAAF Air Traffic Control Branch, again seeing active service in Malaya/Malaysia from 1958–61.
Doug continued both as a specialist Air Traffic Controller and Administrator until 1978, retiring after 36 years service with the rank of Squadron Leader.
During his pilot training, Doug attended No. 2 Initial Training School (ITS) Bradfield Park, No. 10 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) Temora and No. 6 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Mallala, before being posted to the UK where he continued training at No. 11 (P) Advanced Flying Unit (AFU) and No. 2 Flying Instructor's School (FIS) prior to posting to No. 3 (P) AFU.
Back in Australia, his flying postings included Central Flying School (CFS) East Sale, No. 82 Wing Amberley as a member of No. 2 Squadron, No. 6 Squadron and No. 1 Squadron (in Singapore), followed by a posting to the School of Air Navigation (SAN) in East Sale.
As a pilot, Doug flew Tiger Moths, Avro Ansons, Airspeed Oxfords, Wirraways, Lincolns and Dakotas.
His career in Air Traffic Control took him to a wide variety of locations and appointments, and prior to retirement, he was Senior Air Traffic Control Officer at RAAF Base Townsville.
