Tiger Moth A17-711

Purchased by the RAAF Museum in May 1999, VH-RTB was flown from Camden to Point Cook where the aircraft was prepared for display in the training exhibition. The aircraft was chosen by the RAAF Museum due to its very original condition, and the ease of returning the aircraft to the configuration of a World War II elementary trainer.

After running inhibiting oil through the aircraft's fuel system and engine for long-term preservation, work started on the airframe refurbishment required for static display. The existing fabric covering on the mainplanes was in adequate condition, and was rejuvenated and repainted, but the fuselage needed to have all of the fabric replaced. Volunteers and staff carried out this work, and the aircraft also had missing cockpit fittings and operational equipment added to represent a RAAF-operated machine. After painting in World War II training yellow, the aircraft was assembled in the Training Display Hangar and this exhibit was opened in December 2000.
