A37 Challenger CL 604

The Bombardier Challenger CL 604 special purpose aircraft joined the Air Force fleet in July 2002. The Challenger and BBJs (Boeing Business Jets) replaced the five Falcon 900A and two Boeing 707 jets.

The CL 604 is a derivative of the Challenger 600, which has been progressively updated to improve range (up to 7,550 km), performance and reliability. The Challenger is fitted with an advanced technology wing, high bypass CF34-3B engines, and a Collins ProLine 4 ‘glass cockpit’. The Challenger 604 has a maximum passenger load of nine persons.

The crew consists of two pilots and up to two crew attendants. No 34 Squadron operates and crews the Challenger and BBJ fleet, with the service and maintenance contracted to Qantas.

Dignitaries using the Challenger include our Prime Minister, ministers, heads of government, the Governor-General and various heads-of-state.
