Reserve Staff Group
Air Force Standby Reserve (RAAFStR)
The
RAAF Standby Reserve (RAAFStR) does not have a prescribed active
role in peacetime, but contains a pool of ex-PAF, Active and Specialist
Reserve personnel with skills that will be of use to the RAAF
in the event of call out. These personnel do not have a Reserve
service or training obligation. For Officers, who were appointed
to the Permanent Air Force (PAF) before 1 July 2003, early separation
from the PAF is normally achieved through transfer to the RAAFStR.
All PAF airmen and airwomen who enlisted after 1 January 1996
are automatically transferred to the RAAFStR for five years upon
discharge from the PAF. From 1 July 2003, all new members of the
Air Force are required to transfer to the RAAFStR for five years,
or until CRA, whichever is the lesser, upon leaving the PAF, RAAFAR
or RAAFSR.
Some
experienced officers and senior airmen, who are members of the
RAAFStR, undertake ad hoc PAF tasking in peacetime and form an
element of the RAAFStR called the Reserve Staff Group (RSG).
RSG members are posted to RAAFAR squadrons for administrative
purposes.
Joining the Reserve Staff Group (RSG)
Entry
Entry
into the RSG is restricted to ex-PAF and ex-RAAFAR members.
Attendance Commitment
RSG
members have no annual attendance commitment. Selected RSG members
are sponsored and approved to undertake identified PAF tasking.
A RSG member may be approved to complete up to a maximum of 130
days per financial year.
Applicant Selection Process
Members
resigning, retiring or discharging from the PAF request a transfer
to the RAAFStR and are then transferred to the RSG once identified
and approved to undertake a RSG task.
New Management Arrangement
In
February 2005, a RAAFStR Manager position was established. The
new management arrangement will now allow all RAAFStR members
to indicate their willingness to undertake RSG employment by completing
the
RSG Volunteer
Member Information form and returning it to the RAAFStR
Manager, WGCDR Amanda Leslie by mail (R8-7-046 Russell Officers,
Canberra 2600), Fax (02 62652431) or email amanda.leslie@defence.gov.au.
Completing the form does not guarantee an allocation of RSG days
but assists the RAAFStR Manager to identify all existing and potential
RSG members, thereby providing a pool of Reservists who have volunteered
for Service and can be approached to undertake particular tasks
or projects depending on their availability and suitability.
RSG Job Opportunities
Discretionary Funded Reserve Tasks
Air Force Reservists interested in completing discretionary funded Reserve tasks (formerly RSG tasks) should contact WGCDR Amanda Leslie ((02) 6266 7716; amanda.leslie@defence.gov.au). Reservists with DRN access can view the task list on the DPR-AF website.
Undertaking tasks away from home locations
Travel and accommodation costs may be provided to enable a discretionary funded task to be completed by a suitably qualified and available member away from their home location.
Air Force Reserve members who are employed on a task away from their home location, where it is not economical for the sponsor to pay for return travel on weekends, are to be considered on duty for the period of their absence.
